Ray Flash Review
2008-05-14 12:29:00
The ringflash was originally invented for medical photography. Its shadowless light makes it ideally suited to creating warts 'n' all images of, er, warts. We'll come back to that later. It was quickly adopted by macrophotographers, because having a flash that surrounds the lens makes it almost perfect for close-up work. Then in the 1970s, some bright spark thought of using it on people and the soft, even light has been in and out of popularity ever since.Traditionally, ringflash units fall into two camps; expensive, specialist and dedicated to a camera, or really expensive, specialist and too heavy to use outside the studio. The common words - 'expensive' and 'specialist' - meant that until recently the ringflash was the preserve of the professional. The R...

Zeiss ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM (Sony SAL-2470Z) Review / Test
2008-05-14 12:27:00
The Zeiss ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM will surely find many fans. In terms of resolution is may well be the hottest cake around in this class and neither distortions nor vignetting are problems to worry about (all within the APS-C scope). Lateral CAs may be visible at times in wide-angle images but it's a non-issue in the middle to upper zoom range. The only sour aspect of the lens is the quality of the bokeh (character of the out-of-focus blur) which could be better @ 70mm f/2.8 - this may cause headaches for some users. The lens is also somewhat prone to flare. The build quality of the Zeiss is very good although we expected a tad less plastic and some sort of sealing in a lens targeting the professional market. Both tested lens samples showed a centering problem at 70mm - this ...

Sony Alpha 350 digital camera review
2008-05-13 08:25:00
The Sony Alpha 350 is the step-up model from the Alpha 200, itself the replacement for the original Alpha 100 tested here in August 2006. Significant improvements have been meted out and there is some streamlining in terms of controls as well. However, it is an accomplished model and it is the highest resolution sub-£500 DSLR on the market. Well almost, it’s £519 body only. And so, overall, the Alpha 350 has been balanced out to provide a range of advanced features and Live View with a high-resolution sensor but at the cost of some of its predecessors handling capabilities and control. Its performance is excellent and the image quality, even at higher ISOs is very good indeed and makes the Sony Alpha 350 certainly worth considering if you’re in the mark...

Olympus E-3 - full review
2008-05-12 11:35:00
The Olympus E-3 is the long-awaited new flagship of the Four Thirds standard. The E-3 doubles its predecessor's resolution to 10 Megapixels, features tough weather-proof construction, built-in image stabilisation, a fully-articulated screen with Live View, and of course the legendary SSWF anti-dust filter. Olympus has also addressed two concerns with the Four Thirds standard by equipping the E-3 with a large viewfinder and a new 11-point AF system which it claims is the World's fastest. It's an impressive specification, but directly up against models like the Nikon D300, not to mention the more affordable Canon EOS 40D and Sony Alpha A700. To find out how it compares and whether it's a contender in the semi-pro market, check out our Olympus E-3 review - a...

Canon EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM Review
2008-05-12 11:32:00
The EF 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS USM is clearly the winner when it comes to a combination of quality and convenience. The ability to zoom out to 400mm makes it much more useful for situations where action can be close or far away, for example in sports photography. In such situations taking the time to add a TC to a prime lens can mean you miss critical action. It is a stop slower than the 300/4L at 300mm, and that may be it's only major drawback when comparing the lenses. The prime lens allows the use of faster shutter speeds. Of course the 100-400IS a little more expensive and a little heavier, but that's only to be expected in a zoom. With a 1.4x TC it produces quite good image quality, though unless you play tricks by masking off pins, it won't AF on most EOS bodies. Even with a 2x TC the im...

Canon EOS Rebel XSi Review
2008-05-12 11:15:00
We kicked off our session in Auto, with maximum JPEG size (4272 x 2848 pixels) and in burst mode. Here the camera handles all the settings—focus, white balance and ISO; you just adjust the zoom and fire away. And blast away the XSi certainly does. This D-SLR is far more responsive than recent Sony and Pentax models reviewed. Canon added its latest processor (DIGIC III) previously found only on much more expensive editions as well as a new AF sensor. The nine-point system also has one cross type in the center. All of this adds up to a camera that feels like it’s ready to explode when you put it into burst mode. Press the shutter and you’ll know what we mean.Canon gives the XSi a rating of 3.5 frames per second, and this was pretty close to the conclusi...

Canon EOS Rebel XSi Review
2008-05-09 13:15:00
Don’t expect anything radical here—this is a basic black D-SLR with a matte-black body and some textured finish on the pistol grip and rear thumb rest. Yes, there’s an option for a silver body, but if you’re buying a camera of this type, black is what you want. The XSi is definitely lighter than the models we’ve recently reviewed (more plastic, less metal). It weighs 16.8 ounces for the body alone, 25.6 with battery and kit lens. To some, this lighter weight could be considered a bonus, since it means less shoulder ache as you walk around with the camera and it’s easier to hold steady (depending on the lens, of course). Others, however, might think they’re being shortchanged and prefer a more robust frame. As for pure dimensions, the XSi measures 5.1 x 3.8 x 2.4 (WHD, in inche...

Canon 450D review
2008-05-09 12:55:00
Canon EOS review : The Canon 450D is Canon's fourth entry-level model, launched right after Canon set the world on fire with the EOS 300D that was responsible for a price breakthrough. And although we talk about a period of 5 years, which may be considered as quite a long period of time in the digital photo world, a lot of things have changed. Not only the camera in itself has changed; the amount of people using a DSLR has also increased hugely. Sometimes it's like you are left out as a photographer if you don't use D-SLR tools. And if someone spots a photographer with a professional EOS, he will proudly proclaim: "I am also shooting with an EOS". Canon truly stirred up the market with the 300D, which developed the amateur market. > Read our full Canon EOS ...

Sony Alpha A350 Compared to Nikon D80
2008-05-06 08:44:00
Having had the opportunity to put a Sony Alpha A350 digital SLR with DT 18-70mm lens to the test over the past couple of weeks, we can only say that its new 14.2 MP sensor is capable of offering very good results. The additional resolution provided allows for the capture of some finer details and the option to crop even further into an image compared to a 10 MP camera like the Nikon D80.Considering the relative difference in mega pixels however, we feel that the resolution advantage offered by the Alpha A350 does not really meet the cost. Taking into account that the new Alpha A300 DSLR is essentially the same camera as the Sony A350 (only real difference being the higher mega pixels on the A350), we would have to recommend the Sony A300 SLR as offering the ...

Nikon D300 DSLR Review
2008-05-05 09:13:00
The Nikon D300 DSLR is an affordable professional-grade DSLR. It is a major upgrade to the Nikon D200 that it replaces and incorporates many of the features of the top of the line D3.The Nikon D300 has more features than the beginner photographer would ever need. It now also features Live View, which works like in most other DSLRs. Which is to say, it is not like what you are used to on your consumer point-and-shoot digicams. The D300 is not really for the P&S crowd looking to upgrade to a DSLR nor is it for the amateur photographer looking for a first entry-level DLSR.The professional photographer who already owns a Nikon DSLR and lens system will find the D300 to be a perfect backup DSLR. And if you are an advanced photographer looking to upgrade to a better DSLR, the D300 is a slice of ...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 Review
2008-05-05 09:03:00
The Alpha A300 is the middle DSLR in Sony's consumer range. It takes A200's body, 10.2 Megapixel sensor and built-in stabilisation, and equips it with Live View and a screen which tilts for easier framing at high or low angles. It's a compelling package, but the big question is how it compares against the higher-end Alpha A350 - an identical model, other than its higher resolution 14.2 Megapixel sensor. Does the A350 record measurably greater detail, or does the A300 enjoy lower noise levels? Find out in our Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 review where we'll reveal direct comparisons between both Alphas along with Canon's EOS 450D / XSi. And as always, you can check out the highlights in our A300 video tour.more : cameralabs...

Nikon AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm 1:2.8G review
2008-05-03 07:53:00
Nikon first announced the development of the AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF in February 2002, with the lens becoming available to buy in April 2003. Billed by Nikon as a 'compact, lightweight' fast telephoto, the lens features a complex optical design of 21 elements in 15 groups, including no fewer than 5 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements for the correction of aberrations. It improves on its predecessor, the AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8G, mainly by incorporating an optical image stabilisation unit (or in Nikon speak, 'vibration reduction'), allowing hand holding at shutter speeds up to three stops lower than normal without image degradation due to camera shake. The 70-200mm f/2.8 class of fast telephoto zoom is (along with the fast standard zoom) one of the key workhorse lenses for the workin...

Hands-on with the Olympus E-420: Pancake day
2008-05-02 08:36:00
The Olympus E-410 was our Editors' Choice of cameras last year, and the E-510 was our travelling companion around CES earlier this year. We didn't think it was possible for entry-level dSLRs to get much lighter on their feet, but Olympus has pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the E-420, a teeny-tiny dSLR that gets even nimbler with the addition of a dinky pancake lens. The E-420 is a 10-megapixel camera that weighs a mere 440g. One-handed operation is no bother at all, and at 130 by 91 by 53mm, it practically nestles in the palm. Sure, small SLRs aren't everyone's teacup, but there's no denying the portability of this little fella.Images are raw or JPEG, recorded to CompactFlash or xD picture card. An optical pentamirror...

Canon Rebel XSi Review
2008-05-02 08:20:00
Expectations for the XSi were admittedly high, and hence the opportunities for Canon to come up short in the court of public opinion were numerous. In spite of this high bar, the XSi will unquestionably win converts to Canon with its (still) excellent AF system, super-smooth CMOS sensor with very impressive high ISO performance, and (for some users, at least) reasonably functional live view system. Default image processing is perhaps a little bland, though the opportunities to fine tune it are among the best found on an entry-level DSLR. Great lens and flash selections, an interface that works well for those who like dedicated controls for nearly every function, and plenty of opportunities for customization will further entice serious shooters looking for a...

Pentax K200D Digital SLR Review
2008-05-01 10:19:00
The K200D carries on what the K100D started and is still a better build quality than the nearest rivals with its metal chassis. This does make the camera heavier, but I can let that slide for a more durable camera. The lens mount is metal which is standard on any camera these days, but the lenses usually have a plastic mount. Kits for the K200D are available and the advantage of this is the 18-55mm lens having a metal mount as well. This promotes longevity and I think it's a great idea which could be a purchasing decider.Pentax have also been kind enough to fit it with dust and weatherproof rubber seals in the battery bay and card door. The K200D retains the previous battery compatibility of four AA batteries. This would've been a disadvantage in the past with the lack of power compared to d...

Subal ND30 underwater housing for Nikon D300 dSLR review
2008-04-30 08:39:00
When the Nikon D300 was released last summer (’07) I along with many other underwater photographers recognised that its introduction coupled with the relatively low retail price would substantially influence uwp world over. In my role as uwp educator I decided to ‘jump on the bandwagon’ and upgrade from my trusty, reliable and much loved D200.You need to know that I have favoured Nikon since my days with a Nikon F2 and Oceanic housings of the 80’s. I have owned and used Subal housings since the introduction of the Nikon F801 in the early 1990’s. In my teaching role I regularly instruct in Ikelite, Sea & Sea, Nexus and Hugyfot DSLR housings. Whilst I’ll endeavour to be impartial as I can, the influence that...

Sealux CD300 Housing for the Nikon D300 Review
2008-04-30 08:31:00
Whilst my previous two Sealux housings were functional and durable (see http://www.underwaterdisplay.net/rig for reviews) the CD300 shows an improvement in aesthetics and ergonomics with the introduction of some subtle changes including: curved handles and conically tapered flat ports for close-up and macro work.A feature on Sealux housings which I think is a good design attribute is the raised inner lip on the housing body which stops water falling back into the housing when the housing back is removed after a dive. This also serves as a guide to placement of the lid on the housing body for sealed closure. Attention to detail is evident in the design of the CD300. Mineral glass rather than polycarbonate is used for the window over the D300 monitor displa...

Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi hands-on preview
2008-04-30 08:03:00
Four and a half years have passed since the first affordable digital SLR from Canon; the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). In that time we have witnessed two further iterations (the EOS 350D and EOS 400D) leading up to todays fourth generation EOS 450D, with twice the megapixel count of the original (twelve versus six) in a smaller body with a far wider range of functionality and features and a $200 lower list price. Since those heady days in 2004 when the EOS 300D was the only kid on the block we've seen Nikon, Pentax and Olympus all attempt to hit the same sweet spot of size, features and price at the 'lower end' of the DSLR market, with varying degrees of success. Without a doubt the EOS 450D will have to do more today to prove i...
