Ethical Advertising to Kids, an Oxymoron!
2008-09-14 11:01:00
Ok, Bakugan Battle Brawlers is another extraordinarily overpriced TV show promoted kids game. If you kids watches TV cartoons, they are exposed to a continuous stream of thinly veiled infomercials. These are cartoons like Tom & Jerry, they are the Pokemon version of extended commercials. Bakugan Battle Brawlers are another example of the despicable lengths our enlightened corporations go to market to kids. If the toys were reasonably priced then you might be able to justify the marketing ploys. Bakugan Battle Brawlers look like they should be found in Crackerjack boxes, remember the free toys in Crackerjack? These preteen infomercials create a market, promote an erroneous perception of value by alluding to the collector value of the toy (yeah right) and instigate conflict over the purc...

Swaptree Not So Hot
2008-09-10 11:48:00
Why am I talking about a swap site on a tech (mostly) blog? Well swapping doesn’t mean FREE but it does mean inexpensive which falls under the money saving part. Admittedly posting the same blog on both my blogs seems excessive but somehow to me they fit.Swaptree is an online swapping service where you can swap CDs, DVD’s and books with folks from all over. Premise is good, site is a bit sketchy, customer support is non-existent. SWAPTREE has no tech support, none, butkus, zip, nada, zero support. I have emailed their support, their contact or anyone who might answer and there is nobody there. If they have support then apparently they really are terrible since I got no response on any emails I have sent.I wonder who did they pay off on Good Morning America to get recommended. Good Morn...

70's Vietnam, Today Iraq & Afghanistan
2008-09-08 21:58:00
War faced us in the 70’s. Vietnam was foremost in our thoughts as we aged.A good lottery number was often life saving. Iraq faces today’s kids and many do volunteer and some die. In the several years after high school I had many friends who never came home. Sadly today I know some kids who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I wore my ROTC uniform proudly in 1966 and wrote to my buddies who served overseas. Too often those same guys weren’t treated well when they got home. A positive change today is that at least our Vets are being accorded the respect they deserve. It doesn’t mean one whit what you think or feel about the current wars, the kids fighting them are just that, kids who deserve our respect and compassion. There was war then and there is war now, human...

TRADE YOUR BOOKS, VIDEOS AND MUSIC AT SWAPTREE
2008-09-05 12:01:00
I am an avid scifi/fantasy reader or perhaps just an avid reader. I keep the books I love for passing onto the next two generations of avid readers in my family. The bulk of current fiction and stuff I didn’t really love often seems to grow like coat hangers in an empty closet. What to do with all the accumulated things like Cd’s I don’t listen to anymore, movies I don’t watch and books I have read. WhooHoo, there is a place I can trade that stuff and get something I want in trade.I have blogged about PaperBack Swap and frankly like it a little better than SwapTree. http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php PaperBack Swap takes paperbacks and hard backs but does not do music or videos. I like it better in the book area because I don’t have to automatically find someone who wants wha...

AVG Failure
2008-09-02 18:08:00
I have used and recommended AVG Free Home Edition for years. Today I removed it from two more of my computers and will be removing it from all of them. I don’t know if it is some insidious corporate move to get people to change to the paid version of AVG or just an inability to solve their update problem. For over two weeks I have not been able to get my systems to consistently update. Sometimes they update and sometimes they do not. I have seen a lot of comments on the web expressing the same concern. I haven’t heard or seen anything from AVG that has addressed the issue.Since AVG is free it feels somewhat akin to looking the gift horse in the mouth to complain about it but somehow it feels like the other end of the horse. Anti-virus competency is not something most of us are willing ...

The Naked Truth of the 70's
2008-08-22 20:12:00
There is no naked here but it got your attention didn’t it. There seems to be a lot of nostalgia about the 70’s. If you lived through the 70’s and say you remember them, then you weren’t really there. Kinda like a Who concert, if you remember it, you probably saw it on TV. Somehow there were actually 22 million people at Woodstock, if you believe all of us old timers who claim we were there. I wasn’t, but I could have been. I had a ride and didn’t take it. Sleeping on the ground at that point in my life meant that I was too drunk to get home. Later as a Boy Scout leader and a picture of sobriety and responsibility, I again slept on the ground. Frankly the camaraderie of the Boy Scouts was a lot more genuine than many of my hippie friends in the 70’s. Even today we celebrate ...

The Frequent Flyer Miles Gauntlet
2008-08-21 17:39:00
Recently USAirways sent me an email telling me that I haven’t flown enough lately so I was going to lose all my Dividend Miles unless I would pony up $40 per account to keep them. I knew these guys were in trouble but really, use them or lose them. So a couple a days before the deadline I tried to book a flight. Different shades of color on their calendar indicated what days you could get a flight with the miles you have. Some days were blacked out, can’t use them then, usually around holidays. Ok, that is understandable. Then some days you can use the miles but you have to use double the regular miles to get those premium days. Why they are premium is your guess. Then you try to find someway to fit your miles into their schedule.I finally found some dates I could live with, not happy w...

Nintendo Wii Zapper
2008-08-19 14:45:00
First you need a Wii then you add the Zapper. I am a Wii fan and I don’t even own one. My boys have Wii and I have a ball playing games with my grandchildren on the Wii. Since my kids had the first cybercafé in the area, I got to experiment with a lot of the cool kid related stuff. So for all you old Atari gamers out there, the Wii is a whole different level. I can bowl or play tennis with my 4 year old grandchild and race cars with my 10 year old. The Zapper adds the ability to point and shoot. It comes with software that has some strange looking skeletal creatures that you can shoot as they crawl out of the sand or even stranger looking ones that conveniently put targets on their chest. The price is right, $20.00 in many places. It works very well, you put the remote in the Zapper and...

Get Money For Your Old Cellular Phones
2008-08-17 11:27:00
Watching Good Morning America’s tech segment recently, Becky Worley mentioned a site called http://www.flipswap.com/.She mentioned that you could send your old cellular phones to FlipSwap and get paid for them. I wrote down the site address and logged on. It was very simple and I mailed out my old cell phones today. I hope to get paid. I guess I felt reasonably comfortable since the site was mentioned on GMA and one suspects they check out the sites they mention, prior to publicizing them on their show. No fortune will be made in selling your old cell phones unless you have a couple of hundred of them. My three old phones will net me a whopping $35.00, which is still better than them sitting in my drawer collecting dust. FlipSwap also pays the postage so...

Paid Blogging, So Far A Bust
2008-08-15 13:28:00
Last month I wrote a blog on whether you can maintain an ethical perspective and review or recommend a product or site. Perhaps I should have also asked if those who supposedly pay you for these blogs actually have the ethics to pay you. Creamaid was where I signed up and for whom I wrote a blog. Near as I can tell, Creamaid is either defunct, fraudulent or grossly incompetent. (I know say what you mean.) I got butkus back from them, feedback, money, nada.Maybe that means that my blog doesn’t draw enough folks but leaving me blow in the wind is just plain rude let alone incompetent. So I have done more research and I see that there are more sites out there that pay for reviews.I am looking at Netrix , an internet marketing blog and clicked on an ad for sponsored reviews which took me t...

Verizon’s Bogus Claim for Best Network
2008-08-13 14:21:00
I have a Samsung Flipshot phone and Verizon service. I got the Flipsot for the 3 megapixel camera which although it sounds pretty good, the photos are still pretty lame compared to my digital cameras. The theory was that I don’t always have my camera with me but I almost always have my phone with me. Anyway, I don’t take many photos with the phone due to the poor quality of photo. You can see the difference in quality from the 5 megapixel digital camera to the 3 megapixel phone. The phone aspect isn’t all that great either but I can’t blame the phone for the poor cellular network. My big frustration is the Verizon service. Apparently I live in a dead zone to Verizon. I get no signal in my home and an occasional signal if I stand outside on one foo...

Flip Video Way COOL!
2008-08-11 14:16:00
I like to think I am staying in touch with all the cool gadgets coming onto the market even though I am no longer in the computer business. Of course I like to think I can still dunk a basketball and that I am suave and debonair. What I think and reality are not always on the same page. The Video">Flip Video camera never hit my radar until my grandson showed me his. At his age of 10, technology holds few mysteries, it is just, how soon can I get it. He started using the camera less than 5 minutes out of the box and has been having a roaring good time with it. Once again, the premise that good tech has to be expensive is wrong! This is inexpensive, wonderfully useful and good for all ages not just kids. He says the software work...

Steelers Beat the Eagles
2008-08-09 16:23:00
No money saving tech tips, just the begining of one of my favorite seasons. Living in Eagle territory it is often difficult to be a Steeler fan. The Eagles are my 2nd choice and a lot easier to get on TV in this area. However growing up in a steel town, working in a steel mill, cutting your teeth on the Steeler legacy predisposes you to the black and gold. So HooHa! Steelers and nice try Birds, I will enjoy watching you both and if by some miracle we can get an all PA Super Bowl I will be happy for both my teams.......

Safeway WaterProof Bandages—Aren’t
2008-08-07 14:14:00
I recently discovered that the Safeway brand of waterproof bandages are not waterproof. The Water Protection Adhesive Bandages that are advertised on the box as ideal protection for swimming, showering and washing the dishes don’t do any of that well. In the box of 30, one inch bandages I didn’t have one make it through a shower let alone swimming. I emailed their customer service and was told I could return them for a refund with my receipt. I suppose I have the receipt some where but I had already used 25 of the 30 bandages. You go through them rather quickly when they fall off after getting wet.I emailed them back and suggested that they look to their manufacturer for the product since there could be a quality control issue. I am obviously not going to buy another box to determine i...

Cabling Do It Yourself Hazards
2008-08-05 14:33:00
I recently read an article in Popular Mechanics discussing the disgusting things the author had run into while crawling through a crawlspace in an old house. An easy to relate to article for my former techs who had to pull cat5e cable through some particularly hazardous crawl spaces. One week they might be pulling cable through the crawlspace in a 200 year old farmhouse with spiders the size of computer mice and the next they were on 30 foot ladders hanging onto steel beams for dear life.If you are going to do diy cabling plan ahead. If you have walkie talkies break them out. The headset variety are very handy since they keep your hands free. We experimented with the g.i. joe version years back. Do your best to keep your cat5e cable away from a.c. cables and most definitely try not to run ...

Butt Kicking Price on a Wireless G Router
2008-08-02 20:56:00
TRENDnet TEW-452BRP 108Mbps Wireless Super G Broadband Router is a winner this week for best price.I’ve had good experience with Trendnet products plus I like their 3 year warranty even though I have never had to use it. Wireless G still has a lot of life left. Most of us have a mix of wireless technology so a G router isn’t likely to slow you down too much unless all your other gear is N.I’m running a G and I don’t see any issues with speed when I am on my laptop compared to when I am on one of my desktops that are hardwired. My uses don’t put a lot of stress on the network though. Internet access is my primary use of the wireless and that works just fine.Buy.com has the $69.99 router for $48.99 minus a $25 rebate and free shipping. A price of...

Saving Money on Water Bills
2008-07-30 11:20:00
Like everyone else these days, I am trying to come up with ways to save a few bucks on my everyday expenses. In my case this doesn’t save me so much money as it does aggravation. I have excessively hard water with lots of iron and impurities. I have a water softener and a neutralizer. Since I am a rural kind of guy, I have a well and septic system. In order not to overload the septic system I discharge my water treatment water on my side lawn. This leads to some really thick grass in some areas and in the low spots some mud. To me this was the aggravating factor but for you this may be the money saving incentive. If you have public water and sewer you may be able to save a few bucks by changing the cycle of your water treatment equipment. My water guy foun...

Save Money on Gas Right NOW got to Gas Buddy
2008-07-28 11:04:00
If you haven’t found Gas Buddy yet, stop and do it now their site is http://www.gasbuddy.com/Gas Buddy is effective because motorists just like you and me take the time to report the price of gas in their travels. Gas Buddy has a site you can personalize to your local area and find out what the different gas stations are charging. Then you go to the one that has the best price in your neighborhood. Keep in mind if you have to drive more that a few miles out of you way, it won’t be cost productive unless you are getting a whopping better price. How effective is this? There are two Lukoil stations about 1.5 miles apart near me. They normally are between $0.10 and $0.20 different in price. Hey if you can save $3.00 per fill up by an extra 1.5 miles, you’d be nuts not to do it. There are ...

Home Heating Oil—Look Out!
2008-07-26 11:02:00
I talked to my home heating oil company this week. I am on the 9 month budget plan and my budget will increase $160.00 per month over last year. Yeah, that is $160.00 more per month, outrageous. My cap on the budget plan is $4.99 per gallon for heating oil. That is what my budget is based on. If home heating oil goes higher than that I am capped at the $4.99. Assuming I use no more oil than I did last year I know exactly what I will pay. If oil goes down in price, I will pay the lower price but I won’t benefit until the end of the budget and then I will get a refund. The oil company gets my money and any interest they can generate if the price goes down. I get the safety of a cap if the crazy market gets crazier and I don’t get penalized if the price goes down. The other alternative tha...

Network Through Your Electric Outlets
2008-07-24 20:19:00
Home networking can be a pain. Wireless is wonderful when it works. Hardwired networks always work faster but sometimes getting from point A to point B involves running wires through the shower or up the chimney. Face it, most of our homes were not built for ease of wiring post construction. I have had mixed results with wireless, my present Linksys wireless router works well with my Trendnet USB wireless NIC and my built in wireless in my PDA and my laptop. I get less than stellar results at my son’s home with the same equipment. Woe is me, what to do, what to do?Networking through the electrical outlets is finally coming of age. Not only does it work, it works well. It wasn’t tha...

If you are looking for a cheap home computer, this cheapo may be just what you need. It is sold at Walmart for $199.00. You need a monitor and a printer but if you are replacing an aging Dell, as a friend who called me today is, you should already have both. With the included Open Office you have one cheap system. SubNotebooks-Oops they did it again or Déjà vu all over again!
2008-07-15 10:07:00
WhooHoo subnotebooks are predicted to be big….AGAIN. Is there any recollection of the the Poqet PC, Psion palmtop computer, Newton or the Jornada. After 28 years in the computer business, I find many of the headlines Yogi Berraish. Now it is subnotebook vs. the smartphone. Which will be the winner? Reality check, it will be the first vendor to successfully morph the notebook and phone into a easily carried device that is SUPPORTED. Follow through in the computer industry is much like a bad golf swing…non existent. I have owned many incarnations of the subnotebook genre.I currently have a Smartphone, I can access the internet, get email and take iffy 3 megpixel photos. The screen is bright and way too small to be useful. Admittedly subteens and other species with acute vision may not fi...

Infrared Repeaters
2008-07-14 12:32:00
Once again I am going to refer to Diamond Case Designs and once again I will reiterate I am not being paid one dime by DCD nor am I in any way financially connected to Diamond Case Designs. I do find their newsletters and their information center really interesting which may indicate that I need to get a life or maybe not.As you may know, infrared remotes depend on line of sight to function. While babysitting my grandchildren I noticed that I had to open the cabinet under the big screen to use the remote. I thought at the time how inconvenient and it definitely impacts the whole reason for having the components out of sight. How could I use an infrared remote through the wooden door? I happened on the infrared repeaters at the Diamond Case Information ce...

The Health Care Travesty Prescription Plans
2008-07-12 20:44:00
I know, the last three posts have not had a one word to say about money saving tips. Note the philosophic part in the Blog Banner.Prescription plans are a rip off. I know that is hardly news to any of the majority of us who have disgustingly expensive health plans. My plan gives me three months of prescriptions for the price of two if I submit my script to the mail order branch of the insurance company. Sounds good but appearances are deceiving. Take a recent example, a generic drug that I submitted to my insurance through the mail order pharmacy provides me with 90 days supply for $40.00, not too bad, right? Well my local pharmacist, (not the one in the previous blog) tell me if she submits the script to my my insurance company they will only provide a 30...

Local Pharmacy Shoots Itself In The Foot
2008-07-11 20:00:00
Small businesses and some larger ones, bitch constantly about how the big box store or the Internet is robbing them of business. They complain that it is unfair that big box stores buy in volume and get a better price than they get. They complain that the Internet reseller doesn’t have overhead, or taxes or employees or something that makes them more competitive. Bitch, bitch and more bitching and then they drive business to the Internet in droves. My 93 year old Mom is on a walker. It used to have two larger wheels in front and two smaller wheels in the back on springs, supposedly so her weight would depress the wheels and keep her from speeding off into the night. One of the rear, spring loaded wheels broke off. It really didn’t impact the performance of her rig but if you have a Mom ...

Dying Young
2008-07-10 19:34:00
A friend died recently at 39, he dropped dead mowing the lawn. I’ve known him since he was a kid. His parents are my peers. He’s dead. That strikes me as preposterous. How can you drop dead at 39? At my age, they drop like flies but at 39, preposterous. Death is inevitable but expectations dictate that it is age appropriate. This kid was only a bit older than my kids. I can’t contemplate the emotional impact. I’ve got friends who have lost kids overseas in action. They are devastated but since their kids were in harm’s way intentionally, I think they were somewhat prepared for the possibility that harm would come. Dropping dead while mowing the lawn is not one of those things you expect. My heart and my condolences go out to the family and the wife. To y...

Online Backup
2008-07-09 15:17:00
At one time or another we have all lost data. Period, all of us have lost a file or something important we needed. Computers and humans are fallible. Try as we may, we don’t backup often enough or well enough. Tapes break, tape drive fail, backup to the server works great unless the server crashes. These disasters occur with such frequency that most business insurance policies will give a discount for a viable off site recovery plan. The first step in a viable off site recover plan is to protect the data. Having off site hardware is moot without the data. Even the happy home computer crashes. I haven’t had a lot of hard copy photos since 1997, they are all on the computer. I have CDs and DVDs holding the photos but what if it isn’t just a computer cr...

Tivo
2008-07-07 13:32:00
When my sons bought me a Tivo I thought it was a less than stellar gift. I am not a couch potato (computer potato maybe) and I don’t watch much TV. Well, bad or good, I found the Tivo absolutely terrific. For those of you from the planet “what the hell is he talking about?” Tivo is a digital video recorder. It is similar to the VCR we all used to have. However it is way, way better. It allows you to search for shows and set up season passes for stuff you want to watch. A seson pass just means, it will record what ever show you want when it comes on without further intervention from you. Tivo lets you watch the shows you want when you want them. In addition if you are so inclined you can rent movies through your Tivo. There is a subscription fee involved but you can pay for a lifetime...

DSL vs Cable, is there really any comparison?
2008-07-02 15:33:00
This is my first venture into paid blogging so here we go. Best Buys.com is doing a series called “Fine Print Revealed” that shines the light of comparison shopping on different products, services and technology. A comprehensive list of those articles are found here: Best Buys Comparison ReviewsOne of the comparisons they feature compares DSL and Cable. Having had both experiences in a business setting, I feel I can write about it with some credibility. DSL was the first high speed internet connection we had at my office. It worked, not well but it worked. Verizon was having a hard time with fiber and copper connections and we had a very confusing and time consuming situation to get DSL. Once we had DS...

Blogging Ethics-Can you be paid and be ethical?
2008-07-02 14:52:00
Interesting question with an assumption you have ethics which often isn’t clearly demonstrated in many of today’s businesses. I guess it depends on what you write about and how honest you are in writing. As a retired, fixed income kind of guy, I look for things that can bring in gadget or book money without a great deal of sweat on my part. Since I am a technut and booknut, writing about that is a no brainer. Now to get paid for it would be exciting but am I hungry enough to ignore my conscience? I can answer that by the fact that I have been offered industry related jobs by former competitors since I sold my business. As enticing as some of the offers were, I declined as I had signed a non-compete agreement with the guy who bought my computer business...

Hula A Free Online Video Service
2008-06-27 13:43:00
Apparently I have been living in a cave again. I ran across Hula last night. http://www.hulu.com/ It is another Video">online video service and it is FREE. It has a lot of clips but it also has full length movies and series. The currently are featuring all six seasons of Highlander, a cult classic. There is a wide variety of material although quite a bit seems a somewhat off beat. Quality is good and again it is FREE. They say about themselves that Hulu was founded in March 2007 by NBC Universal and News Corp and is operated independently by a dedicated management team. Hulu's mission is to help people find and enjoy the world's premium video content when, where and how they want it. Hulu is an online video service that offers hit TV shows, movies and clips at Hulu.com and other online destination sites — all for free, anytime in the U.S. Hulu brings together a large selection of videos from more than 50 content providers, including FOX, NBC Universal, MGM, Sony Pictures Television, Warn......

Boost your Cable or Satellite DVR recording capacity by up to 400%!
2008-06-21 11:26:00
I got this article in a newsletter from Diamond Case Designs Inc. (the home theatre people) It provides a solution for a frustration many of us have with our TV. The shows we want to watch aren’t on when we are available and when we TIVO them we often blow off stuff we haven’t even watched yet due to lack of space. There is a solution that won’t break the bank. Diamond Case is a family owned and operated business that specializes in knowledge and know how as opposed to down and dirty pricing. That doesn’t mean they are expensive, it just means that finally you can get what you pay for. I highly recommend the company and will periodically reference their newsletters as they are very, very informative. (No, I do not have any financial connection to Diamond Case, however if they wish ...

Email Funnies
2008-06-18 10:47:00
I get a lot of "funny" emails. Some are and most aren't. This is a funny one and I will consider it philosophic.1. A day without sunshine is like night.2. On the other hand, you have different fingers.3. 42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.4. 99 percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.5. Remember, half the people you know are below average.6. He who laughs last thinks slowest.7. Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.8. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the trap.9. Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have.10. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.11. Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.12. If you think nobody cares, try missing a coup...

Jabra SP5050 Bluetooth Speakerphone—A winner!
2008-06-13 07:48:00
Like many out there, I am addicted to my cell phone. I got a 3megapixel phone to get the best possible photo (of course 6 months later a 5 megapixel is out), I put some songs in it (just because I could) and I even use it to make calls. I have a Jabra Bluetooth headset that works perfectly fine, except I feel like even more of a geek than I am when I wear it. Even though PA hasn’t instituted a hands free law for cell phones, it is inevitable. (If we could institute a no make up, no nose picking, no reading, no eating, no making out while driving law it would even be better.) I noticed though that when ever I was in the car and got a call or wanted to make one, either my headset needed charged or it was laying on my desk at home. I did not find the hea...

New Marketing & Web Firm in MA
2008-06-05 09:04:00
A friend of mine has just partnered up with a friend of hers in a new partnership. I based my businesses on relationship selling and support. I felt that if I could establish a rapport with my clients I was better able to meet their needs. Oddly enough I felt that ethical considerations should always be part of my business life. Knowing Maryellen I feel that I can comfortably recommend doing business with this new partnership. The following is their press release. If you are in need for this type of work, I don’t think you would be disappointed. Scituate, Massachusetts (June 2, 2008) – Fat Cat Design, a web and print graphic design firm and Tree Frog Marketing, a marketing communications and public relatio...

Nice 20” LCD Monitor/Nice Price $206.00 with free shipping.
2008-06-03 12:58:00
Envision Professional Series G2016wa2 20" Widescreen Monitor">LCD Monitor - 1000:1, 5ms, 1680x1050, HDCP Supported DVI-D - Black - G2016WA2A buddy’s monitor died last week. He called for some troubleshooting ideas and after I had him connect it to his laptop and still no picture he decided a 5 year old monitor was due for replacement. I found this one at buy.com and recommended it to him. The three year warranty is pretty standard these days but I still like to insure it is included. It is. He did not pay for expedited shipping and got it next day anyway. He hooked it up and so far he loves it. He loves it even more now that the $30 rebate he got last week is off in June. R...

Stuff Running on Your Computer You May Not Know About.

This information is based on the IT Security blog post "10 services to turn off in MS Windows XP," by Chad Perrin. I got the information through ZD.Net and TechRepublic. You should consider joining both to keep up with a lot of the technical issues. So this may be just a random incident but if you use AVG and you do update and there are issues and you r...

This description is right off of the Amazon site and their box has a full one year warranty from Netgear. My experience with Netgear and their service and warranties has been very positive. If you want to live a little closer to the edge, the same unit is available at http://www.computergeeks.com/ refurbished with a 90 day warranty and half the price. For the money, I think I would go new. Of course if you are like me and have multiple old computers on your network, you can just throw some extra drives in them and achieve a similar success. If after reading this you are totally turned on to buy one, the geek link is above. To buy fro...
