Milly is (FINALLY) Home~!!
2008-05-13 00:30:00
I was ecstatic when I received a happy email from Laura, whose beloved dog Milly went missing in early March (read it HERE):On Saturday evening I was watching my two older sons playing football at Bangkok Patana School and I had a call from a lady saying she was sure that her neighbour was feeding Milly outside of his gate. This lady had seen Milly's poster at the vet's in Thonglor 10 (where Milly disappeared). Needless to say, I've had many calls before so I wasn't putting my hopes up too much......... I was at soi 14 Pridi, off 71 Sukhumvit in 15 minutes and meandered my way to some smaller sois............and there was Milly playing in the soi with another dog. I got out of the car and called her name once.......she turned and crawled to me crying......and I did the same, sil...

Cows on Sukhumvit *mooooooooo*
2008-05-12 14:54:32
Sukhumvit was overrun by a whole bunch of four-legged bovines~!! *mooooo~!!*Eh-heh... seriously... these 28 life-size polyester cows are actually part of the "EU Herd of Cows" exhibition, which is the world's biggest public art event representing the European Union and its member states. We all got acquainted with each other at my beloved Emporium and the Benjasiri Park (right next to Emporium).Though each cow represented its own country of origin, some were waaaaay easier to guess (example: tulips = the Netherlands) than the others (check out the mind-boggling French one)!!And... correct me if I'm wrong... but were there TWO different painted cows from Spain~?!This cow parade has stopped by many European countries, as well as China, Malaysia and Vietnam. After Thailand, they will also visi...

Weird (and Amazing) Stuff Found in Sukhumvit - PART 9
2008-05-09 00:36:00
Sukhumvit sky is so schizophrenic nowadays... Is it the pollution~?? Could it be due to global warming~?! Or maybe the window filter's the culprit~?!?! These two panoramic pics were taken only minutes apart~!!Look at the difference in sky color~!!(I personally like the purple one~!!)**************************************************************Here's another example of schizophrenic display:Erm... so are you guys REALLY still open~?! Why is the inside lookin' so DAAARK~?!**************************************************************So I was in a taxi, yea~?? Then I noticed that my driver had exceptionally PRETTY hair:Close-up shot:How the hell did he achieve such shine~?? Such bounce~?! In THIS humid weather~?! | Silly Sukhumvit News~!! |
2008-05-04 23:05:00
Snooker star Stephen Hendry drunkenly drove a taxi along one of the most dangerous city roads in the world (guess which ROAD~!!!). The Scot admitted he bribed a cabbie in Bangkok to let him get behind the wheel. It happened on a boozy night out with fellow snooker star Mark Williams. Hendry, 39, said it was "the craziest thing" he had done and "totally out of character". Hendry, seven times world champion, said he was dared by Williams - both were drunk. He said a dozen cabbies refused his offer of cash to let him drive. But finally, one took his offer and he drove drunk along Sukhumvit Road - Bangkok's main thoroughfare and known as the world's busiest. He said: "Mark Williams dared me to do it. "We hailed about a dozen and they wouldn't let me, so we were creating an even worse t...

after all this time... I nearly missed "Near Equal"~!!
2008-05-01 13:44:59
This is what makes living in Sukhumvit aaaaaall worth it~!! Despite the traffic, pollution, noise and crowd... I am never bored becoz I am constantly finding new things right under my nose~!!Case in point: this dreamy, wooden, nostalgic Thai restaurant, bathed in soft yellow light (pictured right). Called Near Equal, it also doubles as a house decor shop.I mean, I've entered Sukhumvit 39 COUNTLESS times, but I've never even heard wind of this place~!! Until someone took me there... which was a good thing, since it's tucked into a tiny, unnoticeable dead-ended sub-soi in Sukhumvit 39~!!Looks like some typical dark soi, eh~?? But if you go towards the yellow lights in the distance, you'll come face-to-face with THIS sign:Once inside, you'll feel like you've been transported into a time when ...

MK Gold
2008-04-30 13:32:18
I am still in the dark about what makes MK Gold so "golden" that it feels it's more "deserving" of my dough.Oh sure, its exterior in Ekamai (Sukhumvit 63) is pretty impressive.Smiling staff greet you gracefully with a 'wai' as soon as you step in (sure makes you feel like VIP~!!).And look... the place has glittering crystal chandeliers~!!And gigantic golden artsy "stuff" strewn all around~!!Nevertheless, even though my eyes were pretty happy, my taste buds weren't feelin' so hot. I swear, the offerings were the same with the "typical" MK (just minus the ear-splitting noise) and MK Trendi (just minus the dancing). Perhaps my tongue has developed way too-thick calluses due to the usual scorching Thai street food... that's why I couldn't taste any difference~!!...

The Merits of Motorcycle TAXIs
2008-04-27 23:28:00
I am NOT fond of walking inside Sukhumvit 24 (for those of you who don't know, Sukhumvit 24 is the soi of my beloved Emporium). It's always sooo crowded, no matter what time it is (except maybe Songkran haha). It also gets flooded when it rains heavily. Worse, it's got no pavement~!! So when you're walking there, various kinds of vehicles will pass oh-sooooo-very-close to your skin you can actually feel the HEAT from them~!! (And no, the feeling is totally not the same as spa steam treatment~!!). But anyway, y'all know that I hate hot weather (and I hate WALKING in hot weather even more), as mentioned HERE. "So how would you enter Sukhumvit 24, then??" some of you might ask. The answer, my dearies, is MOTORCYCLE TAXIs. These guys pictured...

2008-04-24 02:50:00
As requested by Nini, I am posting some more points about myself... so we aaaaaaaaall can get to know each other betta~!! HAH~ 1). I am a true-blue Virgo. So that means I am a neat-freak. And a picky perfectionist. A planner, list-maker and organizer. I like things to be clean and orderly. Mess drives me NUTZ and I haaaaaaate it when things do not go smoothly according to my (well-thought-of and flawless~!!) plans. Naturally, I am not the easiest person to live with (HA HA HA...) because I have a few (OK, more than a few) house rules:- toilet paper should be hung with the hanging side IN FRONT. Don't even try to argue with me, because it makes PERFECT SENSE to hang toilet paper like this - it's easier to grab AND it stays cleaner this way (the other way of hanging w...

Betcha didn't know there's actually a *- NORTH -* Korean restaurant in Bangkok~!!This unique eatery (named "Pyongyang", of aaaaall the names in the world~!!) is actually not in Sukhumvit (I am scandalized by this - I demand a North Korean restaurant on my beloved road A.S.A.P~!!!), but this is just tooooo good to pass up. For those who are curious, it's actually in Pattanakarn 20.The whole place is HUGE and glittery.(So erase any thoughts you have of starving babies). And guess what~?! It turns out that the place has a dancing and singing show EVERY SINGLE NIGHT (oh my~!!). Done by extremely beautiful, slim, translucent-and-fair-skinned, charming young ladies~!! *droooool*They can croon in Korean, Japanese, Chinese and English~!!They can glide gracefully while wearing very inconvenient (but...

OOH-LA-LA~!! I've been verrrrry naughty this Songkran.Nooo, I did NOT break my sacred vow to not splash water and have a dry Songkran (read my explanation HERE).Rather, I've been reading a very risqué book.OK, so some of you might pooh-pooh and comment, "A BOOK~?!?! You mean those boring things with no pictures that you actually have to hold in your hands and FLIP~?! Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn~~~~!!!!"Aaah~~ but this ain't no ordinary book. In fact, it's not available ANYWHERE in the Kingdom of Thailand. As in: you can NOT buy it.Because it's BANNED by the Thai government.Yes folks, censorship is still alive and well in the twenty-first century. The naughty book I'm talking about is this:"The King Never SmilesA Biography of Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyadej"by Paul M. Unfortunately, stupid and annoying people kept walking IN FRONTA my camera grrrrrrrrrrrr... I mean, were they BLIND, or what~?! Some made an effort to quickly walk past, but some thick-skinned creeps didn't even give a rat's ass and kept on strolling s-l-o-w-l-y as if they were walking hand-in-hand with their lover on a beach under the moonlight. | Songkran Puppets Dance |
2008-04-15 08:20:09
Imagine your surprise if you're confronted by THIS at the supermarket cashier~!!That's right, folks... shoppers at Emporium were treated to a Thai puppet dance for Songkran~!!The unique thing about these puppets is that each requires THREE puppeteers for it to come alive, and the puppeteers also mimic the puppet's actions:- the left puppeteer controls the puppet's left hand and head- the middle puppeteer control's the puppet's feet- the right puppeteer controls the puppet's right handCalled hun lakhon lek in Thai, this dying art form was popularized by Joe Louis (Thai name: Sakorn Yangkhiawsod), who was also one of Thailand's top puppet masters and last "Grand Master" of small puppet performers.More info HERE~!! no strings attached~!!streetsmartsukhumvit...

Songkran in Sukhumvit~!!!
2008-04-14 09:22:08
Sukhumvit is DEAD. It all started about two to three days before Songkran… There was a mass exodus of humanity coming out of Sukhumvit. As a result, by the time Songkran made its first splash, the road is like a ghost town. Ain’t no matter whether it's day or night, the usually gridlocked Sukhumvit has turned soooo spacious: What a truly remarkable (and RARE~!!) sight~!! (You can actually hear the crickets chirping, yo~!!) Many shops are closed, starting with my favorite kuaytiew shop (booohooooo): (The sign says “closed for Songkran 12-16 April, reopen 17 April" - oh I shall be counting the DAYS~!!). Now, for those who think that the whole Kingdom of Siam turns into a sea during Songkran, let me tell you this: it IS possible to remain dry during Songkran,...

Chico
2008-04-08 14:28:00
If you’re a fan of kitty cats This is the place where you should be at~!! (OK, lame set of rhymes – sorry). The point I’m trying to make is that Chico is more of a place for cat lovers rather than a place to eat and drink. Located deeeeeeeeep inside Sukhumvit 53 (almost at the end of the soi, in fact), Chico serves both as a café and shop selling interior décor, many dedicated to the furry (and clawed) creatures – it’s got cat houses (pictured left - swiped from the website), cat key chains, cat coasters, cat-shaped purses, cat stamps… purr purr... you get the point (and NO, it does NOT sell cat meat for barbecue - just in case some of you smart asses are wondering). The Japanese owner is (obviously) a cat lover; in fact, she has ten – count ‘em TEN –...

In Defense of Nana
2008-04-03 15:53:57
Poor Nana. Its notorious reputation has overshadowed everything else that the whole area has to offer.Mention that you're going anywhere near Nana (Sukhumvit 3), more often than not you'll get snickers and raised eyebrows from the TAXI driver. Some would even turn oh-so-helpful: "You buy Thai lady in Nana? I take you good place, OK~!! Cheap and clean~!! Very beautiful Thai lady~!!"Of course, it doesn't help Nana's case that the area is synonymous with naughty things, namely:Counterfeit goodsCheap sex (and its substitutes)[These guys standing around will accost any foreign male who crosses their path with various offers, such as, "Thai lady, sir~? 50 baht only~!!" Y'all gonna hate me and my new idea FO SHO.It all came to me when I just realized that it’s actually Earth Hour when I turned on the TV (ironic, isn’t it?) and saw that many cities went dark for an hour by choice to commemorate the coming Earth Day.(I was actually in Emporium for the MIDNIGHT SALE: buying more “stuff”, using up the aircon and those evil paper (and yes, also plastic) bags, PLUS enjoying the bands on stage – basically being very environmentally UN-friendly). Even Google went black. All the nonsense hype isn’t lost to me: 1). I actually had to turn on CNN to find out about the event. 2). In some cities, there were huuuuge electronic boards counting down 3, 2, 1 to Earth Hour. 3). How does a black Google page help the Earth? You can say that Google ...

I have soooo... much "stuff" in my closet that I can't see ANYTHING.So, I have decided that the only way to let my closet breathe is to have a GARAGE SALE. I am selling many of my clothes (tops, skirts, dresses - many have been worn only 1-2 times), accessories (earrings, necklaces, bags, etc.) and shoes (bought on impulse, dammit~!!).Here are a few samples:I've never worn these shoes (I even still have the original box):Here's a Cacharel dress which I also have never worn:And a Barbie-inspired pink draped Max Azaria dress:These are just the tip of the iceberg. I have tonzzz of other stuff just takin' up space in my closet.Anyone interested to buy 'em? | Pid Term Yai Huajai Wawoon |
2008-03-26 15:38:08
Is it just me or is "Pid Term Yai Huajai Wawoon" (Hormones) uncannily similar to "Rak Haeng Siam" (Love of Siam)~??They both deal with contemporary young love, they both use fresh cute faces and even their posters look like they're relatives. The only difference is that "Pid Term" is purely heterosexual HYUK HYUK~!! - oh, and the party's bigger and rowdier this time around.(Rant: WHO THE HECK thought of the Thai title~?! I swear, it's such a mouthful~!! And nearly impossible to translate to English - thus the "Hormones" English title. My best go at the title is something like - "Summer Vacation of Restless Hearts"... or something like that) *throws in the towel*Eniweeeei... the plot revolves around four (and a half - explanation below) couples' trials and tribulations during one summer vaca...

The Wrath of the Hi-So
2008-03-24 14:28:00
Last Saturday, we found out just how lo-so we were.Noel, one of my online buddies had four invitation tickets to the Luxury Lifestyle Week 2008 at Siam Paragon (I was the only one who dared to go with her, since everybody else thought the event was toooooo hi-so for mere mortals).Titled The Glitz (official website here), the event aimed to be "the luxury lifestyle week where the hi-class society gets together in one place". Its targets: blue blood (THAT's what written on the website), CEOs, business owners, rich Y generation (I swear I'm NOT makin' this up), celebrities, foreigners and politicians. So the two of us met up at Paragon and checked out the exhibition first.Hmmm... we shoulda noticed that this event was WAY out of our league just from the "products" that were at the exhibition:A...

Weird (and Amazing) Stuff Found in Sukhumvit - PART 8
2008-03-18 01:54:00
Psst... I was eating in an Italian restaurant (which shall remain nameless - you'll see why) during one of those nonsense "government enforced no alcohol" days, when one of my unrelenting dining companions actually asked the waiter, "No alcohol today, huh?" Straight-faced, the waiter then answered by saying YES they do sell alcohol~!! (* scratches head *). In turn, my dining companion declared, "Oh, dii jai maaaaak~!!" (Oh, I'm sooo happyyy~~!!)So this being Sukhumvit (location: Bangkok, Thailand), my dining companion was more than happy to once again, break the rules and (GASP) order alcohol on a day when it was NOT (legally) allowed to be sold.I looked around the restaurant and didn't see ANY beer or wine bottles on ANY tables... Hmmm... How were we gonna get away with this, I wondered.....

A Conversation With A TAXI Driver - PART 6
2008-03-11 03:15:00
So there I was, in a TAXI, grumbling under my breath because I’d just been conned to go aaaaaaaaall the way from Sukhumvit to Srinakarin just for a friggin’ MOVIE. It all started because a friend of mine was lazy to get out of his house and insisted that I go to his place (which turned out to be in the hicks – gawd) instead. “Why does this fool live aaaall the way in Srinakarin anyway,” cursed I. “That’s like, thang changwat (external province/country-side) already~!! BAH~!!” My TAXI driver, a man who looked to be in his late-thirties was a particularly chatty one. As usual, he started with the typical questions, as I mentioned before HERE. “It’s quite late already; why are you going to Srinak...

Smile Teen Massage
2008-03-08 07:19:47
The heavens have finally smiled on me and sent a steadfast, brave soul to be my “lab rat” for the mind-boggling, notorious and oh-so-mysterious “testicle massage”~!! Now, I'm suuuure that some of you will remember that many months ago, right here on this SSS site I’d posted some pictures of this very *COUGH COUGH* “unusual” massage shop sign, which I found when I was walking in Sukhumvit 26: Read my (imaginary) conversation between the shop’s receptionist and customer HERE. Ever since then, I’ve been looking practically EVERYWHERE and asking EVERYONE I know (with testicles) if they would be willing to “volunteer” and try it out. Oh sure, they would giggle and laugh, declare that they’d be totally up...

Ghostly Shrine in Sukhumvit~!!
2008-03-04 08:17:20
Nang Nak is perhaps the most famous Thai ghost EVER. Her immortal, blood-soaked story has kept countless Thai children awake at night (and behaving well – if not, their mothers threatened Nang Nak’s ghost would come and eat their brains aliiiive~!!). While historical proof is hard to come by, the Thais still believe in Nang Nak, even until today. In fact, she has her own shrine in Sukhumvit (pics of the shrine are below this long-winded explanation) and is worshipped as a protector of military conscripts and bringer of good luck (especially winning lottery numbers). The legendary tragic story of Nang Nak has been retold many times in the Thai media (TV dramas, DVDs, comic books, you name it~!!), most famously in the 1999 movie titled “Nang Nak” dir...

The reason I've been quite inactive in Multiply is because I've been down with a NASTY cold. So yea... I've been sneezing and coughing... having stuffy nose, headaches PLUS bad mood (aaarrrggghhh~~).At first I thought it was just "the usual cold" (coz hey - so many people around me were also having the same symptoms, la~!!), but after a week with no improvements whatsoever... I thought it was time to get some ammunition.Butttt... I didn't have time to go to the hospital (OK, I admit I was LAZY to actually go to the hospital, waste time waiting to see the doctor, pay and then get the meds, etc., etc., etc....)So I thought, "Hey, Boots in Empo has a pharmacist on duty~!! I can just quickly pop in there and get some meds~!!"And that was what I did. I went into Boots and asked the pharmacist f...
