Thai Wat - Year of the Tiger

The name of this Thai Wat, Chohae, is believed to have come from the type of cloth brought from Sip Song Pannah in Southern China which the villagers used to wrap around the Chedi. Wat Phrathat Chohae is an ancient Temple built in the 12th century about much the same time as Sukhothai was the capital of Siam by Khun Lua Ai Khom....

In Thailand, the Rhinoceros Beetle is known as Kwang and can be seen on sale everywhere from early August onwards, often tethered to a piece of sugar cane. Costs vary from 50 Baht upwards depending on size and suitability for fighting. Kwang are very popular with Thai children who search the trees for them in the early mornings and use them for fighting contests. There are several different types of Rhinoceros Beetle in Thailand with some more popular for fighting than others. The Xylotrubes species is most in demand and has many different Thai names according to the appearance of the beetles....

We visited a snake show in Khon Kaen featuring King Cobras. King Cobras are not your average pets but the snake show in this village is given by the residents who all keep King Cobras in their homes. The village we are talking about is Ban Khok Sa-Nga in the Sai Moon district of Khon Kaen....

Passing through Phichit we were reminded that Phichit was known as the Land of the Crocodile, indeed the crocodile still features largely today with several crocodile farms, a crocodile pit and an attractive Park with crocodile sculptures. This crocodile park is called "Suan Somdet Phra Si Nakharin" and is located on the banks of a large freshwater lake called Bang Si Fai which is used by the Fisheries Dept. for fish breeding....

About 70kms outside the city of Khon Kaen we found this small Dinosaurs Park and nearby a Dinosaur Museum. The Dinosaurs Park is beautifully maintained and a fun place for children with plenty of dinosaurs to look at. This is Khon Kaen's very own Jurassic Park.
