In Corfu, a Two-Villa Retreat
2008-09-02 02:38:00
A hilltop studded with olive trees in the mountainous northern reaches of Corfu, one of Greece’s most popular islands, has inspired a restless foreign correspondent to create a haven.Over the past four years, Keith Miller has built two luxury villas with views stretching to the mountains of nearby Albania. “I wanted the houses to be organic — to look as if they had grown out of the ground along with the olive trees,” said Mr. Miller, 59, during a recent tour. Both structures are a mix of modern and traditional Greek styles but blend with their surroundings thanks to the use of locally produced building materials and the earthy colors — chiefly cream, beige and rust — commonly used on the island. External walls and some of the internal ones include fragments of local stone, and the roof tiles were reclaimed from old farmhouses, increasing the sense of authenticity. ...

Kea island
2008-08-28 06:41:00
KEA, Greece – Father Lefteris – habit flowing, serving tray in hand – exits the kitchen and glides into the monastery's shaded courtyard. The middle-aged Greek Orthodox priest is carrying a half-litre carafe filled with what looks like water. Only it isn't water. The shot glasses give it away."Some `white coffee'?" he proffers, a twinkle in his eye.He is euphemistically referring to the locally distilled raki, a clear variety of firewater similar to grappa in its powerful kick and alarming capacity to inebriate."Bravo," he says when a visitor refills his own glass after the first round. ...

The southern Peloponnese
2008-08-21 17:12:00
We had two options when leaving the Ionian Sea by yacht.Turn left at Patras and take a short cut through the man-made Corinth Canal to the Saronic Gulf, Athens and the sun-drenched Greek Islands, or carry on south around the outstretched fingers of the Peloponnese Peninsula. We opted for the long route. The Peloponnese is a huge chunk of Greece separated from the mainland by the Gulf of Corinth with the Ionian Sea on the west and the Saronic Gulf on the east. It's a region of outstanding beauty with fertile valleys, spectacular mountains, beautiful beaches and some of Greece's prettiest towns, including the former capital, Napflion, and the old walled town of Monemvasia. ...

Greek authorities vowed to clean up the tourist scene in seaside resorts
2008-08-11 15:38:00
GREECEGreek authorities vowed to clean up the tourist scene in seaside resorts after a 20-year-old Australian was beaten to death by bouncers at a Mykonos bar. Much of the resorts' violence and indecency comes from bar owners serving drinks fortified with industrial alcohol.GERMANYA five-day strike by Lufthansa staff ended Aug. 1. The airline does not expect its schedule to return to normal until mid-August. ...

A forest fire raged unchecked on Greece's Aegean island of Skyros
2008-07-14 16:33:00
ATHENS (Reuters) - A forest fire raged unchecked on Greece's Aegean island of Skyros for a second day on Sunday burning thousands of pine-trees but no injuries or damage to property were reported, a fire brigade official said."There are several centres of fire in the northern part of Skyros where there are no homes," said a fire brigade official who declined to be identified. "The fire is not under control yet as there are high winds in the area."The official said the cause of the blaze was unknown. Two fire-fighting planes, three helicopters, 26 fire engines and more than 200 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The official said the fire has burnt some 1,500 acres of pine-trees but no homes. ...

Where to eat and where to stay on this Greek island
2008-07-02 15:49:00
The water and the picturesque views of clustered white houses are the main attractions in Santorini. Spend a day at the Red Beach, located at the island's southwest tip. The sand is pebbly, but the setting is striking because the beach is nestled in some huge red and black volcanic rocks. Take a boat tour that makes stops for short hikes up a volcano and a swim in hot springs. A word of caution: Wear a dark-colored bathing suit because the red silt lining the hot springs can stain clothing. Nomikos Travel has two daily boat tours of those sites, starting at €20 (about $30) a person; boats depart from the port in Fira (30-22860-23660, nomikosvillas.gr). ...

Firefighters battle forest fire on Athens outskirts
2008-06-25 16:15:00
Firefighters battled a major fire Wednesday on Mount Hymettus on the outskirts of Athens that burned through one of the Greek capital's last forests but posed no threat to homes."We are trying to contain the fire, a very difficult blaze which moved with incredible speed," fire department spokesman Yiannis Kapakis told the Mega television channel.Thirty-seven fire engines, 150 firefighters, 100 soldiers, 13 water bombers and four helicopters were mobilised to fight the blaze that broke out shortly after midday near Glyka Nera, around 30 kilometres (20 miles) east of Athens.Winds over 50 kilometres (30 miles) an hour pushed the flames to the summit of the mountain, out of reach of ground units, but firefighting aircraft kept the flames from reaching the suburbs of Holargos and Papagou on the other side."Homes are not in danger, but a beautiful forest is threatened," Glyka Nera mayor George Siokos told state television NET. ...

The perfect Greek island
2008-06-22 02:49:00
Watermelon or baclava? Morning nap or afternoon siesta? This secret beach or that one? Matt Rudd finds life full of tricky dilemmas on Skopelos. The man hiring the boat to us wasn’t there when he’d said he would be, so I walked up the stony path, away from the tiny, rickety jetty, until I got one bar on my cellphone . I dialled his number and he answered in Greek. I said: “Hello, it’s Matt. We booked a boat at 10am and it’s 10am now.”In reply, he spoke for two whole minutes, both of them still in Greek. From what I could gather from his tone, he was neither apologetic nor angry. If I were pressed, I’d say he sounded philosophical. Expansive even. At the very most, judicious. ...

Enjoy This Greek Resort Island's Peaceful Beauty
2008-06-15 00:28:00
Situated in the eastern Aegean Sea near Turkey, the beautiful Greek resort island of Samos has been known for its rich collection of beaches, picturesque towns, stellar scenery and wonderfully warm weather. My wife May and I had planned to come to this island three years ago, but ran out of time during our first visit to Greece. We visited Athens, Santorini and Crete.Samos is a bit out of the way. We had to fly first to Athens before taking a 50-minute flight on Aegean Airlines to the island. A ferry from Athens would have taken eight hours. ...

The best Greek island tavernas
2008-06-09 11:48:00
Feasting on, more like. There was a fisherman’s relish - “made with rabbit, because Greek islands always have so many rabbits running wild on them,” he explained to any of us silly enough to suppose that Greek island cooking is all about seafood and salads.A stifado of aubergines. A chicken terrine, in which the meat all seemed to have that tender, moist quality of those plum bits on the underside of a a bird, known as ‘oysters’. Octopus, wonderfully mauve. Cubes of rare tuna wrapped in vine leaves, and more rabbit, stewed with leeks and peas... ...

Paleros Village Beach Resort
2008-06-01 05:56:00
Located in western Greece the setting for our Paleros resort could hardly be more beautiful. A seemingly land-locked bay is surrounded by mountains and lush gardens. Close to the traditional Greek village of Paleros and the magical Island of Lefkas, it's perfect for action and exploration, as well as simply relaxing.Like all the Greek resorts, Paleros has generally excellent conditions for most watersports. However the often light breezes and exceptionally calm waters of the bay make it especially suited to waterskiing and wakeboarding. Both are offered free of charge. ...

The Cyclades have long lured British holidaymakers
2008-05-27 15:13:00
Mykonos and Santorini, the more established destinations, are the most practical options for housebuyers, as you can fly to both direct from Britain. For those in search of a perfect slice of Greece and the chance of a bargain, however, it is worth taking the longer ferry ride to Naxos or Amorgos. All the islands can be reached by ferries that run daily from the mainland ports of Piraeus or Rafina; journey times vary between two and seven hours, depending on the distance and the company you use.If you harbour dreams of renovating a traditional ruin, you may well be disappointed. Many who set out with that idea change their minds once confronted with reality. ...

36 Hours in Athens
2008-05-03 02:32:00
Once the private grounds of Greece’s long-deposed royal family, the National Gardens is one of the few leafy oases in Athens. Cypress, pine and palm trees shade trails, brooks, bridges, duck ponds, a botanical museum and prides of stray cats. The stately parliament building is next door and faces the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, where tourists try to distract the photogenic young evzones (the elite military guards who wear the skirt-like foustanella). ...

Cruising the Greek Islands
2008-04-29 02:48:00
Islands are fewer and further apart in the northern Aegean. If you want to pack more isles into a week at sea, consider Hebridean Spirit's Legacies of the Cyclades itinerary. This one starts and finishes in Rhodes, hopping through the Dodecanese and Cyclades islands by way of Halki, Folegandros, Syros, Mykonos, Amorgós and Nisyros. Plenty of variety here: Rhodes Old Town is one of the most stunning medieval survivals in Europe. Ermoupoli on Syros is an odd time-warp port – it was once the most important entrepôt in Greece, and it conceals the faded grandeur of its 19th-century neo-Classical heyday behind the clutter of a working seaport.I have been keeping quiet about Folegandros and Amorgós for many years, but the cat has crept out of the bag – these are two of the loveliest and least-visited of the Cyclades, and their whitewashed villages put more commercialised islands to shame. ...

Rhodes Island
2008-04-24 18:37:00
The city of Rhodes was founded in 408BC, the days of Alexander the Great and the Peloponnesian Wars.Sokratous Street is not a steep hill; the Turks, while they held sway, called it the Long Bazaar. You cannot miss the Turkish heritage. The Mosque of Suleiman, named for the conqueror of Rhodes, towers above the bustling shops. I'm worried about the minaret's lean. It's warm - 300 days of sunshine a year, thanks to Helios, the sun god. Time to sit in the shade, enjoy a crisp Greek salad and a Mythos beer. The young waiter at Cafe Sessytio in Sokratous Street spreads his arms in welcome. I'm in a parallel universe. Outside the walled courtyard, noise, banter, shoppers. Here, quiet, cool, comfort. ...

Greek Island Of Crete
2008-04-17 05:16:00
he world has always rejoiced visiting Crete, the largest of Greek islands and also the fifth largest in the whole of Mediterranean. The island is spread over an area of 8,336 km² (3,219 square miles) in the Southern Greece, and forms one of the thirteen Greek peripheries we know about. It is also believed to have played a key role in the Greek nation's history, something quite evident even today, as we go through its archaeological past. There is a rich marine life, fine sea beaches and a great hospitality - of which the Crete hotels make up a key ingredient - to be explored and enjoyed by anybody willing to spend some quality time on this island. ...

Island getaway
2008-04-14 09:57:00
Staying in Greece, which has the lion's share of the Mediterranean islands, a great base for wildlife watching is Alonissos (crowdfactor 64), in the Sporades. It's the hub for visiting the outlying Sporades islets, many within the Sporades Marine Park, which helps protect the monk seal (permits required). Alonissos, with its secluded, boat-accessed beaches, is 20 minutes by hydrofoil from Skopelos and less than an hour from Skiathos, which has an airport.Lesbos (cover photograph), with a crowdfactor of 59, is the third-largest Greek island and another favourite with wildlife enthusiasts, thanks to its birdlife. It is heavily wooded in the east, agricultural in the centre and rather bare in the west. A car is essential for exploring this large island – ju...

Greek island of Karpathos
2008-04-10 16:01:00
Pigadia, Greece - Their eyebrows are black and thick and their facial expressions austere and proud. The women from the small town of Olympos, high in the north of the Greek island of Karpathos, are different from the women on the rest of the island. This part of Karpathos has the harshest landscape on the 300 square kilometre island thanks to its craggy coastline and the waves that crash upon the shore. But its olive groves and hidden bays also make it the most beautiful place on Karpathos. Olympos is difficult to reach: a ferry travels twice a day from the island's capital, Pigadia. You can drive by car, but the road is unpaved and full of potholes and steep inclines falling away to the sides. ...

Complete Greek in the Peloponnese
2008-04-04 17:07:00
Typically Greek: a church no SkopelosDana FacarosPublished in the April issue of The Sunday Times Travel MagazineForget the islands: fly into Athens, hire a car and swing around the Saronic Gulf into the Peloponnese, the three-pronged peninsula south of mainland Greece. In an hour, you cross the Corinth Canal into another world. The arid light of Attica softens; barren rock gives way to cypresses, olives, vines and oranges. And in spring, everything is luxuriant; even the cracks in the walls are filled with flowers. ...

Paxos: perfectly peaceful
2008-04-01 15:28:00
One of those timeless Greek islands, Paxos is a million miles away in mindset from the busy resorts of Corfu but a mere hour by hydrofoil. The island is only seven miles long and 2½ wide, and no car journey need take longer than 15 minutes, but there are many nooks and crannies to explore and great contrasts of scenery, with the olives, poplar and cypress so typical of the Ionian islands.Transport is usually by car, moped or boat, but there is one bus, which makes a circuit of the island. If you use it often the driver and jolly female conductor will soon treat you as a regular. Familiarity is one of the pleasures of a small island. It’s likely that the owner of the local grocery store is also the person from whom you will rent your boat, moped or taxi. ...

Santorini
2008-03-30 03:18:00
Only on Santorini, the volcanic Greek island where the legend of the sunken city of Atlantis likely originated, will you find luxury hotels that are -- well, basically, caves. That's how people have lived for thousands of years along the 1,000-foot-high cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea, in caves hollowed out of the black and cream-colored rock. Every now and then, most recently in 1956, an eruption and earthquake reduce the houses and churches to rubble and people rebuild, always around the caves, or "traditional houses" that have long provided shelter there. ...

Greek island of Skopelos was being brought under partial control
2008-03-26 05:48:00
Gale-force winds blowing in the area had been hampering firefighting efforts since the fire broke out on Monday, but no inhabited areas were in immediate danger.Skopelos Mayor Christos Vasiloudis said that the fire was brought under partial control, and that he hoped it would be fully under control in a few hours' time.It was not clear how the blaze began. It continued to burn through the night despite overnight rainfall.Greece often suffers from extensive forest fires, but they usually occur during the summer months.Last August, devastating fires raged out of control across the country for a week, killing more than 60 people. ...

A massive strike in Greece is causing headaches for tens of thousands of travelers
2008-03-20 17:40:00
Over 100,000 workers walked off the job in all sectors, in order to express their opposition to government plans aimed at reforming the country’s pension scheme. Well over 60 flights operated by Olympic Airlines were cancelled, with roughly half being international and the other half having been comprised of domestic routes. Additionally, a total of 23 flights operated by Aegean, Greece’s alternative carrier, were also cancelled over the course of the day. While the strike wrecked havoc for those relying on air travel, people who use trains did not fare any better. According to news reports, virtually all intercity train service in Greece was suspended due to the mass strike. City buses, trams and underground trains were also reported to have experienced disruptions as part of the walk-out. ...

Kefalonia Island
2008-03-18 15:18:00
Traditional villas remain the most common type of housing on Kefalonia, as a result of strict Greek planning laws. New structures must follow the established rectangular form, be pale in colour and made of comparable materials. Porphyrios has come up with a two-storey courtyard structure in tune with the island's Italianate buildings,Influenced by a period under Venetian rule during the Middle Ages. His design cleverly allows every hotel room to have a view over the valley to the sea. Elia Valley aims to be up there with the few truly luxurious hotels on Kefalonia, competing with the Emelisse and Olive Grove Studios. It will be managed by the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group. ...

Mykonos: Greece's 'Super Paradise'
2008-03-12 02:27:00
Mykonos, Greece — I thought I knew myself. At least, I thought I knew what kind of vacation I like — a topic that occupies an enormous chunk of my waking hours.Point me toward the Uffizi or some other vast museum and I'll be happy for days. Hand me a ticket to a London West End theater or some tragic Italian opera and I'll think I'm in heaven. My vacation philosophy until now? Give me a lively city and let me cram in as much culture as possible. I'm happy to let others soak up the scenery and show me their pictures later. So why am I utterly content to be stretched out on Super Paradise Beach doing absolutely nothing?Yes, there's a book beside me, some ancient Greek mythological something-or-other I should have finishe ...

Ancient Tomb Found on Greek island of Lefkada
2008-03-08 03:59:00
The find is a miniature version of the large, opulent tombs built by the rulers of Greece during the Mycenaean era, which ended around 1100 B.C. Although dozens have been found in the mainland and on Crete, the underground, beehive-shaped monuments are very rare in the western Ionian Sea islands, and previously unknown on Lefkada. The discovery could fuel debate on a major prehistoric puzzle — where the homeland of Homer's legendary hero Odysseus was located."This is a very important find for the area, because until now we had next to no evidence on Mycenaean presence on Lefkada," excavator Maria Stavropoulou-Gatsi told The Associated Press. ...

The Greek town of Monemvasia.
2008-03-05 15:18:00
Monemvasia is almost an island; its only link to the mainland of southern Greece is a narrow causeway. To reach it, it’s best to go by road from Athens, either by car or coach, which takes about five hours. Sometimes ferries call; sometimes not. If you’re thinking of going and don’t have your own transport, the hotels or a good travel agent will give you the latest advice about what’s running. For train-lovers, there’s a quirky little railway that follows a circular route around the Peloponnese from Athens; but you’ll still need to combine that with a bus/coach/car journey. There are also luxury cruises that call in. ...

Isle be back - guide to the Greek islands

EasyJet’s decision to retain four routes to the Greek islands following its purchase of GB Airways has come as a relief to specialist operators and dynamic packaging companies. Dave Richardson looks at what five of the top islands have to offer:Skiathos Where: It’s one of the Sporades islands in the northern Aegean, in eastern Greece.Flights: Charters only, from main UK airports between May and October.Accommodation: Mainly three-star, with a choice of hotels, apartments and a few villas. Time travel in Greece
2008-02-27 03:34:00
The Tholos area shows a virtual journey to Athens from archaic times to the Roman era, getting a close up view of the city’s temples and beautiful buildings. With the goddess Athena as guide in the Agora visitors watch the destruction of Athens by the Persians, participate in building the Poikile Stoa, follow the Panathenaic Procession and can even vote in a process known as ‘ostrakismos’ which allowed citizens to vote out men who where believed to be a threat for the good of the city; visitors take part in this process by pressing a button next to their seats and expressing their opinion of who they want to depart. Finally, the newest virtual reality tour takes visitors on a walk through Ancient Olympia, the cradle of the Olympic Games.‘The target was to create a...

Yoga for beginners in Greece
2008-02-23 09:27:00
Travel à la carte have been running yoga holidays in Corfu and Paxos for 15 years. Often the students on the yoga holiday are the same students that the teachers see in weekly classes back home, so integrating beginners can cause problems – especially for the new student, who is asked to play catch up both on the social front and on the mat!As a solution, TALC asked Zoë Reason, who has been coming to Paxos with them for over ten years, first as a student and more recently as a teacher, to devote a whole week to complete beginners. ...

Across the Aegean Sea
2008-02-19 16:39:00
Not that the announcements varied wildly. "Welcome to the beautiful island of...." and "gather in the main lounge at 9am for tour one" became familiar phrases throughout the two-week cruise in these sun-soaked waters. With a total of 6,000 Greek islands to choose from, a smallish cruise ship like the Spirit lets you experience as many in a fortnight as you might see in a decade of `normal' holidays. ...

10 classic Greek Island tales
2008-02-15 16:11:00
Which island to choose? I've been wondering that for 25 years - luckily we've run several fantastic articles since 2007 to help you decide.Oh, that old one again. Well, actually Skopelos is the business says Matt Rudd. "If you do want to break the fabulous monotony of beach life, you can walk up into the forests, have a snoop around a hilltop chapel, spot birds – I don’t know. Some people even come to Skopelos on walking holidays. Weirdos." ...

Greece holiday planning guide
2008-02-09 09:16:00
It's the sense of escaping to a slower, less stressful, more beautiful world that makes Greece such an excellent holiday destination. Even in the busiest islands and resorts, you know that you have only to bump down a nearby track or scramble over a low headland to find a hidden bay framed by an empty beach and a deep-blue, translucent sea. And if you want some distraction, you can always take a boat trip to another island, or head off and explore the nearest ruins. ...

Greek adventrue
2008-02-03 16:56:00
For the next two days we visited all of the mysterious ruins and temples I had heard about all of my life. A path dubbed "The Archaeological Park" begins at Hadrian's Gate and winds up through the Acropolis. We dined along the trail at the bottom of the ancient Agora (market place) and watched the Parthenon change colors -- beige, then pink, then bright white -- as the setting sun cast its last rays upon it. ...
