How to Become a Farmer
2009-05-29 22:12:50
Spend your mornings picking green beans. Listen to the birds. Ride a tractor. Tone your arm muscles. Sleep more soundly than you ever have before. Be doted upon at farmer’s markets by city dwellers desperate for your summer squash.Post from: peripateticliving.com

Advice to the Not-Yet Graduate
2009-05-27 22:19:11
Avoid the ennui of the "what do I want to do with my life?" Instead, think, "what are the things I want to do?" While this seems obvious, students often separate their lives into school and (somewhat ominously) the Real World. While there certainly is a dichotomy between student life and otherwise, entering the next stage of your life can be fun and less stressful with just a little planning.Post from: peripateticliving.com

Despite all the glossy press about victory gardens and the value of growing your own food, the economics of starting a new garden rarely work out. Thankfully there are several measures you can take to increase the likelihood of having your garden pay off.Post from: peripateticliving.com

If you want to improve your quality of life, I can’t imagine anything more effective than becoming a bike commuter. Many people vehemently argue for the virtuousness of bicycling on the basis of its environmental sustainability, but there are a million other, more manifest, reasons to sell your car.Post from: peripateticliving.com

So much of the way we live and enjoy our lives is determined by the physical space that we inhabit. I can’t help but find it odd that we would trust such an important aspect of our being to the outdated architectural idea that we need one room for cooking, one for sleeping, one for living, one for bathing.Post from: peripateticliving.com

It’s getting to the point these days where airplane travel is cheaper than the Greyhound, but even so, it’s essential to log at least one Greyhound trip in your lifetime. It’s the deepest American cultural immersion experience that I can think of.Post from: peripateticliving.com

One of my favorite ways to travel is to set up volunteer gigs in the places that I want to visit. There are so many benefits to doing this: it enables you to get to know the community that you are visiting, it feels good to help out, it’s great work experience, it is the best way to learn a language, and often you can arrange free room & board in exchange for your service.Post from: peripateticliving.com

Dead-End Jobs
2009-05-20 17:12:19
People laugh when they read my résumé. I’ve been financially self-sufficient since I was 15 so I have quite a few jobs to list out. To name a few: nanny, painter, construction worker, race horse exercise jockey and groom, personal assistant, biology and economics tutor... the list goes on. But the most important thing that I’ve learned from working dead-end jobs and not allowing them to be my personal dead-end is that it is vitally important to spend within your means. | Don’t Spend Your Money or How to Budget and Avoid Profligate Waste |
2009-05-20 17:02:43
When I was a 14 year old babysitter I came across a personal finance book in the home of the kids that I was caring for that changed my life. The inspirational authors decided that their life goal was to build a little cabin and dedicate their free time to the things they enjoyed doing, which incidentally was not the jobs they were working at the time. They achieved their goal in no time flat. How? By getting intimately aware of where their money was going – recording every dime spent.Post from: peripateticliving.com
