Honolulu (CNN American Morning) -- A balmy breeze gently blows across the beach, with the warm, clear water of the Pacific Ocean just a few feet away. It's a place honeymooners and families go to get away from it all. But these days, things aren't so perfect in paradise.
High fuel prices have caused airfares to skyrocket. And the economy has caused some Americans to postpone or downsize their travel plans. Fewer tourists are coming to Hawaii, and some think the problems are only beginning.
ATA and Aloha Airlines have already gone bust. And starting next week, two Japanese airlines will increase fuel surcharges on flights to Hawaii by 43%. American Airlines just announced plans to eliminate its Chicago-Honolulu route at the end of the year.

Rising airfares and fewer flight choices could spoil some travelers' plans to visit Hawaii this summer.From June to August, airlines have scheduled 14% fewer seats than last year between the mainland USA and Hawaii, according to a USA TODAY analysis of flight schedules. The biggest cuts came about six weeks ago, when two passenger airlines went out of business — and prices jumped."There are fewer seats in the market, therefore the airlines are able to raise their prices," says Rex Johnson, CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Board.

She works quickly, seemingly without thought, while carrying on conversations with those arriving at the open-air pavilion of the visitor center at Senator Fong's Plantation & Gardens for a lei-making class. Clearly she has done this before. Important plant, the ti, sacred to Laka, goddess of the hula. One hundred ti leaves add up to a hula skirt. Wrapped in a piece of cloth it will last for years, aging to the rich brown seen in old Hawaii drawings.

Jim Kauahikaua, head of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, gave a slide presentation showing that present flows are contained in an area nine miles uphill from Pahoa.Three flows have taken place since July 21, the longest being five miles, and all solidified, he said. A fourth is now active but has miles to go before it even matches previous flows, he said. All of the flows have been open aa, which loses its heat and hardens. If the flows change to pahoehoe in a closed tube, they could flow a lot farther, Kauahikaua said.

The National Weather Service cancelled the hurricane watch for Hawaii’s Big Island and downgraded Flossie to a tropical storm as the system passed by the island’s south shore on its westerly path away from the state.

NOAA's National Data Buoy Center has successfully established four new tsunami stations in the northwest Pacific Ocean, east of Japan and Russia. The four Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami, or DART stations, help provide additional detection and warning capability for Hawaii, Alaska and the West Coast of the United States. "The DART network is part of an ongoing effort to increase the U.S. tsunami warning capability," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

Gotcha with that headline, didn’t I? I admit, it’s kind of a trick, because every beach in Hawaii is free. By law, not even the exclusive 5-star resorts of South Maui or scattered along Kona’s Gold Coast on the Big Island can prevent public access to their beaches. Of course, some resorts do what they can to restrict access, for example, by limiting the number of public parking spaces near the beach. But don’t be fooled: you’re free to stroll, swim or surf just about anywhere along Hawaii’s 750 miles of coastline.
