| Hawaii suffers a tourism blow |

Honolulu (CNN American Morning) -- A balmy breeze gently blows across the beach, with the warm, clear water of the Pacific Ocean just a few feet away. It's a place honeymooners and families go to get away from it all. But these days, things aren't so perfect in paradise.
High fuel prices have caused airfares to skyrocket. And the economy has caused some Americans to postpone or downsize their travel plans. Fewer tourists are coming to Hawaii, and some think the problems are only beginning.
ATA and Aloha Airlines have already gone bust. And starting next week, two Japanese airlines will increase fuel surcharges on flights to Hawaii by 43%. American Airlines just announced plans to eliminate its Chicago-Honolulu route at the end of the year.

| Fewer seats, higher airfares cast a shadow over Hawaii |

Rising airfares and fewer flight choices could spoil some travelers' plans to visit Hawaii this summer.From June to August, airlines have scheduled 14% fewer seats than last year between the mainland USA and Hawaii, according to a USA TODAY analysis of flight schedules. The biggest cuts came about six weeks ago, when two passenger airlines went out of business — and prices jumped."There are fewer seats in the market, therefore the airlines are able to raise their prices," says Rex Johnson, CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Board.

Oahu hotels had the best room occupancy in Hawaii for the week ending Feb. 16.Room occupancy increased 5.5 percentage points to 85.9 percent, as compared to the same period in 2007.The statewide occupancy rate was 84.2 percent, up 2.8 percentage points.Maui hotels were 85 percent full, an increase of 1.7 percentage points over mid-February last year.Kauai hotels were 82.8 percent full, up 4 percentage points.

You might get a great deal on a rental car on the island of Oahu. But if you stay in Waikiki, as almost all visitors to Oahu do, you may pay as much as $25 (plus tax) to park your car for the night, according to a survey of Waikiki hotels conducted by Travel Hawaii LLC in Honolulu (http://Travel-Hawaii.com), a leading Hawaii Internet booking service.Travel Hawaii's survey found that parking rates at six Waikiki hotels will run you $25 per night (plus a buck for taxes), for example at the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk and the new Wyland Waikiki.
