Six Vegas bargain hotels under $60
2008-02-19 04:21:00
The last post I wrote about Vegas hotel deals, we got a comment that said, “Anybody who pays $160-$200 night for a hotel room is an idiot. What a rip-off for just a bed, a TV, and a bathroom!â€I’d like to say that I swing both ways when it comes to hotel deals. On one hand I like to look for value in upscale rooms. I am from the camp that adores TheHotel at Mandalay Bay. This is a hotel room with a living room, big flat-screen TV, separate bedroom and big marble-tiled bathroom with a large tub (with its own flat-screen TV!), that’s relaxation in 725 square feet to me. When it goes on sale, I perk up.

13 of the world's most remote hotels
2008-02-10 03:32:00
Regular readers will know that The Sunday Times likes a bit of five-star. Mud wraps, we enjoy. Hand-dived scallops, we endorse. But romance is our weakness, and no amount of Molton Brown or Moët can beat the simple allure of a wild, abandoned shack. Last autumn, I stayed at Sheneval, a boggy bothy at the heart of the Highland wilds: stags bellowed from the slopes, ghosts rattled around the rickety rafters, walkers shared single malts round a dung-fuelled fire. Draughty and dank, creaky and cold, it made my inner Rob Roy weep with glee.

We stopped in Singapore a couple of years ago and stayed in a very large hotel near Orchard Road. Do you know of any smaller hotels that we could try on our next trip this November, which are still comfortable, but more individual and more designer in style? Our budget is up to about £120 a night.A real stunner is the Scarlet Hotel (00 65 6511 3333) in the heart of Chinatown. Splashed in rich red decor, with gold and black trimmings, it's gone for a designer boudoir effect. Some of the 84 rooms are very small, and some are even windowless, but there are larger and pricier rooms if you prefer. Either way, you won't be able to resist ending each day with a nightcap in the rooftop Breeze bar, with wooden decking, sultry

Ten hotels that made history
2007-09-13 14:49:00
It was a Saturday evening like any other. And as the crepuscular light fell on Paris, a pair of lovebirds dined on what would soon be their last meal at the legendary Ritz Hotel. The evening was, of course, August 30, 1997 and just after midnight the couple—Dodi Al Fayed and Diana, Princess of Wales—would perish in a car crash in a tunnel along the Seine. The Ritz, which for more than a century had cultivated a devoted following among the world’s elite and well-known including the likes of Marcel Proust, the Shah of Iran and Coco Chanel, was suddenly thrust into the public consciousness and became synonymous with the death of a larger-than-life royal: Diana Spencer.
