Pad Thai
2012-05-23 00:27:00
More years ago than I would like to admit, we took a Thaicooking class from our friends Saluay and Cheri at Hut 10at McMurdo Station. Cheri had recently taken a similarclass at the Baan Thai Cookery School in Chiang Mai, Thailandand was willing to share her new-found knowledge with us.Our friend, Saluay, who is originally from Thailand acted asco-teacher and we learned how to make all sorts of great Thai dishes. In Antarctica, of all places! We even receiveda great cook book to take with us. Ever since then, I've lovedto make Pad Thai. It's one of my favorite dishes since I loveThai food and I love taking all the steps to make it a great dish. Lynn claimed that my latest effort was possibly the bestPad Thai she's ever had and I like to think it was pretty darngood as well. Darn...no...

Donating Blood
2012-05-21 05:52:00
Donating blood is something I used to do frequently, starting when I was in college. However, it's been over a decade since I donated blood. Well, today I jumped back on the donating wagon and gave a pint. I did have ulterior motives though. Because I gave blood, Lynn and I will be able to go to the JUCO (Junior College) World Series that starts this weekend in Grand Junction, for free. Everyone that participates in the "Step Up To The Plate and Donate" program gets a free ticket. We would have gone to JUCO anyway, since we like baseball, and this is a prime time to enjoy it here, but being able to help others at the same time, makes it that much better!...

Grand Valley Beer Festival
2012-05-19 02:59:00
Today, we used the tickets I won from the television to attend theGrand Valley Beer Festival, being held at the University Center,at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.Because it's only five blocks from our house, we were able to walk (and as a result, not have to worry about having had a few too many to drink). Lynn nor I aren't very big drinkers, but when we do drink beer, we like to try local brews as well as beers from small breweries. The Beer Festival was perfect for this as most, if not all of the 22 breweries I counted were from Colorado. Each person received a small glass thatwould be filled at each table you visited and you could try as many of the brands as y...

All Seasons Cashel - Room 202
2011-11-21 17:51:00
On February 22, 2011 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struckChristchurch, New Zealand. Life has not been the samefor the citizens of the city. This includes many friendswe have made there over the years. Lynn was staying atthe All Seasons Cashel hotel in the Central Business District when the quake struck. Because the entire areawas devastated, including her hotel, she was not allowedto return and gather her belongings. Over the last several months, almost all of the USAP people that werestaying in Christchurch at the time, have received theirbelongings from hotels in which they were staying. Allbut those staying at the All Seasons Cashel. Today, (exactly 9 months after the earthquake) Lynn receivedword that her belongings were being retrieved and thatthey will be returned to her soon. We consid...

Home Again
2011-10-18 02:48:00
Well, we're not really home. That would be our cozylittle house in Grand Junction. However, over the years we'vespent so much time in Antarctica, that our room in Dorm 208 isour second home. After a couple of weeks for me, and a coupleof months for Lynn, we were finally able to move into our summerhome in Dorm 208 after our Winterover friend Mark left the roomand headed back to civilization. Of course, we have to do abit of furniture moving, box moving and general decoration tomake it "ours". It felt good to back in the neighborhood again.Lynn was in a temporary room during the six weeks of Winfly, andI joined her when I arrived several weeks ago. No more walkingdown the hall to the bathroom since we share a bath with our twosuitemates. We also know most of our neighbors down the hallsince...

Ten Years of Luggage Tags
2011-09-26 17:39:00
I'm leaving in a couple of hours to start my journey to Antarctica.it will be my 12th season overall and I'm looking forward to seeing Lynn, old friends and getting to work.Ten years ago, October 5th, we made it to the Ice for the first time It seemslike so long ago, yet it also seems to have gone by so quickly. Every year,The United States Antarctic Program asks that each person place a luggagetag on their bags that is provided by the program. We've kept at least oneof them from each year we've headed south. These luggage tags havea lot of miles on them!...

The Big Peach
2011-09-14 03:14:00
Photo by Christopher TomlinsonNew York City is known as "The Big Apple". Maybe Grand Junction shouldnow be known as "The Big Peach". Grower Robert Helmer is holding a peachthat was recently harvested in the Grand Valley that weighs a whopping 1.5 pounds! The size of a softball, he can barely hold it in his hands. The average peach bought in grocery stores weighs just .5 pounds so, thisis a pretty big one! However, it fell just short of the record, as a peach onceharvested in Michigan grew to 1.6 pounds. Maybe next year......

Like a Virgin
2011-09-08 04:48:00
Grand Junction Regional Airport is served by six majorairlines. However, Virgin America is not one of them.Well, not until today that is. Apparently a Virgin Americaflight, traveling from San Francisco to New York with 117 people aboard had to make an emergency landingvery early this morning in Grand Junction after oneof its two engines failed. There weren't any injuriesand everyone was placed in hotels and fed before gettingback on a replacement plane this afternoon. I'm prettysure that Virgin America won't be adding GJT to it'ssmall list of North American airports served anytime inthe near future, so this was kind of a treat to see this plane in our vicinity....
