LotRO Housing Review
2007-10-30 23:07:16
The “Open House” preview on the Roheryn server is over and the devs are asking for feedback on the forums. For the unaware, the Roheryn server is a “preview server” (not a test server, I’ve been told) for Lord of the Rings Online. It’s the staging ground for the big enhancements they have been introducing into the game since it was launched last April (has it really only been six months?!), and usually it’s not the final version that actually goes into production. As they are getting ready to publish the Book 11 expansion, which includes player housing, the changes are in Roheryn but no houses were on sale except for a limited period of time yesterday afternoon (1-4 PM EDT). Judging from the turnout at the “Open House” event, considering that it was held during working hours on a working day, a great number of people must have been as excited about the new feature as I was. Here are a couple of pictures to show you what I mean. The Eyes and Guard Tavern, where noobs gather Elf Housing Broker mobbed Turbine didn’t announce the mechanics of the open house but in this case, the early birds caught the proverbial worm because there was a finite number of homes on sale. Supposedly, in the live version, new neighborhoods open up as old ones fill up but no new neighborhoods appeared on the list yesterday. Within a few minutes after the elf houses went on sale, the deluxe homes were gone. A few minutes later so were the standard houses. I imagine not too many testers bothered creating a kinship so there were quite a few of those available. read more...

One MMORPG to Rule Them All?
2007-06-23 09:57:42
Lord of the Rings (LoTR) fans now have the opportunity to cast themselves as their favorite Hobbit, Elf, Dwarf or Man. Game software makers Turbine and Midway announced Tuesday the release of “The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (LoTRO).” The game is the first massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular trilogy set in the mythical realm Middle-earth. “The release of “The Lord of the Rings Online” marks a momentous occasion for MMO gamers and Tolkien fans around the world,” said Jeff Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine. “Countless adventures await gamers eager to experience Middle-earth in an entirely new way and we’re confident that once they’ve visited this epic world, they’ll never want to leave.” The game, in development for more than four years, lets LoTR fans experience the perils and adventures of Middle-earth as an interactive experience brimming with life and filled with the familiar people, places and monsters from the much-loved fantasy novels, Turbine said. One Ring Beta-tested by roughly 1 million gamers, “LoTRO” has been hotly anticipated by Tolkien fans, Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. He expects the release to be tremendous. “Anticipation for this game was huge,” he said. “However, among those already in games like ‘World of Warcraft,’ there didn’t appear to be as much buzz.” The game, Enderle explained, stays very close to Tolkien’s vision, and the graphics are not only stunning, but very consistent. While Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) owns the rights to LoTR film-based games, Turbine has successfully crafted the game based on completely new adventures. read more...

Newbie Archet: in 40 minutes or less
2007-06-21 03:04:06
When you arrive in Archet you’ll find yourself standing in front of Mundo Sackville-Baggins. Talk to him and he will give you a quest called Intro: Amdir’s Request which requires you to speak with Amdir. (Note: The Ring icon signifies that this quest is a part of the epic story arc.) To find Amdir, run towards the south. After just a few seconds you will see him sitting against a post. Talk to Amdir to finish Mundo’s quest and he will give you another quest called Intro: Captain Brackenbrook. This quest asks you to go to The Mad Badger and talk to Captain Brackenbrook. The Mad Badger can be found if you turn to the south and go through the door on top of the staircase facing the east. Run up the hallway until you find Captain Brackenbrook. Talk to him to continue the quest which needs you to return to talk to Amdir. Go back and talk to him to finish the quest. You will then be given another quest called Intro: Honing Your Skills for which you need to visit your Trainer and train the skills available to you. To find the Trainers, turn towards the south and run past The Mad Badger. Then you must turn to the west and run until you see several people in front of a building. These people are the Trainers. Your trainer will have a symbol over his head. Talk to him to train your skills, both Active and Passive. When you’ve trained them all, put the ones you want in your Quickslot at the bottom of the screen. Finally, talk to him again to continue the quest and return to Amdir. Talk to Amdir again to finish the quest. Then you will be given another quest called Intro: Seeing to the Defense which asks you to talk to Dirk Mudbrick. When you accept the quest Celandine Brandybuck, the Hobbit standing next to Amdir, will have a quest for you. Talk to her and she will give you a quest called Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings. For this quest, you need to collect four Kingsfoil Leaves. read more...

How to Choosing Your Weapons in Lotro
2007-06-18 12:55:37
Written by and adapted with permission of Shannong (US Forums) This Guide From: lotro.tentonhammer.com Added This Here Wanna share it for every Lotro Fans to improve their Skills. _____________________________________________________________________ One of the most confusing and oft-debated aspects of LOTRO game mechanics is the general question of whether faster or slower weapon setups are "better". Specifically, this usually revolves around a debate about dual-wielded weapons versus 2H weapons, but can also apply to a debate about whether guardians are better-served by 1H + Shield setups versus 2H weapons. There are six main aspects to this debate: read more...

A Beginner’s Guide to the Quests and Story of LotRO
2007-05-30 10:40:33
So I made my character… now what? Well, there’s a lot to be done. But one of the key features of LotRO is its intricate quest system and delicately woven story. This guide will help you become familiar with both. The Story of LotRO Story? What story? If you’re one of the millions who have read the books or seen the movies, The Lord of the Rings has a deep and intricate timeline that follows the trials and hardships of many different characters in the fight against the Dark Lord Sauron. There’s plenty of info on the lore of Lord of the Rings to be found at the Encyclopedia of Arda. How is that handled in the game though? Through the use of quests and cinematic events, the story crafted by the Turbine and numerous Tolkien Experts will be played out by you, the player. Okay, so where does my character fit in? As a dwarf, elf, hobbit, or human, you are one of the many free people of Middle-Earth. Your character’s path does not follow in the footsteps of the books’ characters, but rather down a different path that was only oft alluded to in JRR Tolkien’s notes and appendices. Without spoiling much of what you’ll see in LotRO, there is a mounting dark force on the rise in Angmar, and it is up to you and the friends you make in the game to thwart it. read more...

Forming a family in Middle Earth
2007-05-26 11:31:58
Perhaps you have seen someone running about Middle Earth with the title like "Wokky, Daughter of Wren". It sounds very homey, and in keeping with fantasy lore. Maybe you are close to some friends in game, and want to strengthen your ties by forming a family unit. Although not as full-featured as some might like, Lord of the Rings Online does provide for familial organization. It can be a little confusing, so let's walk through it. Marriages are not yet in game (due some time after launch), but one can be a parent or child of another player. Let us say that Wren would love to be a great old gaffer one day. She doesn't, but let's say she does, and picture her hobbling about, whacking people with her cane of much butt-whooping. She wants children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren at her feet. Assuming that she can talk her friends into going along with this, she can get started with no special skills ?just like real life! Your LOTRO Family Tree: Understanding the gen...

LOTRO from the Dark Side
2007-05-21 12:56:07
While I was busy NOT getting the Keeps taken care of on Silverlode, I was over at Dark Side Comics where SLAGG, a local LAN Party group was a good eight hours into their gaming party. WOW, Quake 3, WOW, LOTRO, WOW and some other games (plus WOW) were keeping people glued to their PCs. The local server of choice for LOTRO was... not Silverlode, so that's one memo that Brian (operator of Dark Side Comics) and I don't get a gold star for distributing. All good, though. I gave out a few LOTRO posters, stared in absolute disbelief at what was going on in "God of War" on the huge screen in the console game area, and then headed back to my office to see what I could do to further thwart Bill's efforts to provide an entertaining evening of events, who at last report said he was up to 50 participants and growing. While there, though, I got the chance to ask Andy, one of the LOTRO players and also the resident tech, a few questions: What is it you do at DarkSide Comics? I take care of the machines, organize and support the games... mostly tactical games, but lately we've been getting into MMOs like WOW and LOTRO. You were in the LOTRO Beta, correct? Yeap. As soon as I found out about it, I went for it. Was it because you were into MMOs or because of the Tolkien theme? I was already into MMOs. WOW the current game I was playing, but when I found out there was a Lord of the Rings Online, I couldn't not play it. As a matter of fact, I recently signed up for their lifetime thing. I'm in for as long as they plan to keep the servers up. You also play WOW, so what do you think about the similarities and differences? read more...

The Struggle for the Ettenmoors
2007-05-16 07:00:25
A life in the Ettenmoors can be a hard one if you stray too far from the safety of Glân Vraig. Its exquisite Elven architecture and serene beauty make one wonder why anybody would want to leave. But that’s exactly what’s required of you as a solder in the armies of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth (the Freeps). Beyond the walls you will find the sprawling lands of the Ettenmoors. This is Turbine’s ‘Monster Play’ zone and you will find monsters (Creeps). Or rather, the monsters will find you. Player controlled Creeps are ferocious and blood thirsty. The fastest way they can advance their monster characters is to kill you and your allies. Because of this, they hunt and raid tirelessly. Their ranks include the Uruk-hai Reavers (Slice and Dice), Uruk-hai Black Arrows (archers), Uruk-hai War Leaders (tank – healers), Giant Spiders and the mighty Warg. With their incredible speed, their ability to move undetected and ‘throat ripping’ attacks, Wargs are easily the most feared creatures roaming the Ettens.read more...

LOTR Shadows of Angmar removes marriage features
2007-05-15 00:45:07
Following a debate regarding same-sex marriage and inter-species marriage, Turbine, the company developing The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, just decided to pull marriages from the game altogether. According to Katherine Glover of Salon, the decision came from the executive producer himself, and the marriage feature was completely removed from the game. The MMO title of the "Lord of the Rings" franchise is still in heavy development, although it had entered the Beta testing period back in September. Entering a discussion of features that should be added into the game, the developers found themselves talking about marriage and the restrictions of such a feature available inside the game. Of course, there wasn't any claim as to what triggered such a decision, but some sites have speculated that the decision was made to neither take a stance against or for same sex and inter-species relationships. Such news of the heated discussion, however, sparked a stunning controversial fire over the Web that opinionated columnists gave their own critiques for or against the move. There has yet to be any official statement from Turbine regarding the issue, but it seems that their decision is final for now....

The Starting Minstrel Guide
2007-05-14 11:16:57
The Minstrel: Minstrels are the best Morale boosting (Healer) class in all of Eriador. It is capable of melee combat, ranged damage via songs, and fellowship buffs. You can solo easily, and you're always in demand for fellowships. The Stats: Every song, ballad, anthem, ect. requires power to sing and how much power you have is based upon your Will. Vitality will give you a higher morale, which will help keep you up longer if things get out of hand. Fate can be good to have at later levels when power regen in combat becomes more important because of longer and harder fights. Your melee damage and chance to evade and parry attacks are based upon your might skill. If you plan on soloing the majority of the time I would suggest a good balance between Will and Might. If fellowships are your thing you'll want to go more will heavy. The Races: All races can be a Minstrel, and no race is really better than the other. Look over each for its strengths and weaknesses and pick your race based on your play style. I have been playing as a Man Minstrel which seems to be sort of middle of the road (ie. Solos well, and groups well). read more...
